The market

How UK brands buy bed linen

Led by the duvet cover

British households sleep under a duvet with a cover, so a UK set is a fitted sheet, a duvet cover and pillowcases. Flat sheets sell mostly into hospitality.

Housewife or Oxford

The two UK pillowcases share a 50 x 75 cm pillow. The housewife is plain-edged with an inner flap; the Oxford adds a flat fabric border. UK buyers expect both to be offered.

The length step

Single and Double mattresses are 190 cm long, King and Super King 200 cm. Fitted sheets cut to one length will be short on the larger beds.

A Queen is not a Queen

Where an older UK range says Queen it means the 120 cm Small Double, not the US Queen. We specify by centimetres, not names.

Shipping

Getting goods to the United Kingdom

DestinationPortsTransit from Nhava Sheva
East coastFelixstowe, London GatewayAbout 20 to 30 days
South coastSouthamptonAbout 20 to 30 days

Planning ranges from Nhava Sheva via the Suez Canal, before customs clearance. Routing around the Cape of Good Hope during Red Sea disruption can add 7 days or more.

A GB EORI number

Importing into Great Britain needs a GB EORI number, and the declaration is filed through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service by your broker or forwarder.

Separate from the EU

Since Brexit the UK is its own customs territory, so a brand selling into the UK and the EU clears two entries under two sets of rules.

Documents from us

Commercial invoice, packing list and origin documentation the trade agreement asks for, with export clearance and inland transport to the port handled at our end.

Duty

Trade terms

The UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement came into force on 15 July 2026 and removes UK import duty on Indian textiles, including bed linen and table linen, when the goods carry valid proof of origin. Import VAT still applies, and VAT registered importers can use postponed VAT accounting.

Verified on 6 October 2026 against the sources below. Duty and trade terms change, so confirm the current position before you price: PIB: CETA in force on 15 July 2026, House of Commons Library: UK-India FTA, UK Trade Tariff.

Labelling

What the label must carry

  • Fibre composition, under the UK textile labelling regulations, which mirror EU rules but are now a separate regime.
  • Care symbols, not legally required but expected by UK retailers.
  • Country of origin, not legally required but common practice.

Labels are built into production to the wording in your specification. Guidance: GOV.UK: textile labelling.

Market rules

Rules worth knowing

What a buyer selling into the United Kingdom is expected to have in hand, beyond the label. Each links to its official source. Verified on 6 October 2026.

Furniture fire safety for cushions

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations cover scatter cushions, seat pads and pillows sold in the UK, while bedding such as duvet covers and sheets is excluded. Filled home décor for the UK is specified with this in mind.

legislation.gov.uk: SI 1988/1324

A separate labelling regime

UK textile labelling mirrors the EU regulation but is now a separate law that can diverge, so a label built for the EU should be checked against the current UK position.

CETA rules of origin

Zero duty under the UK-India agreement needs the goods to meet its rules of origin and to carry proof of origin with the shipment, which we provide.

Questions

Common questions from UK brands

Is bed linen from India duty free in the UK?

Yes, since the UK-India trade agreement came into force on 15 July 2026, when the shipment carries valid proof of Indian origin, which we provide. Import VAT still applies. Duty position verified on 6 October 2026.

Do you make housewife and Oxford pillowcases?

Yes. Both are made to the 50 x 75 cm UK pillow, the housewife plain-edged and the Oxford with a flat border, along with King and square sizes.

Do we need separate shipments for the UK and the EU?

Separate customs entries, yes. The UK and the EU are different customs territories, so each needs its own declaration, even if goods travel on the same vessel.

Do UK sets include a flat sheet?

Usually not. A UK retail set is a fitted sheet, a duvet cover and pillowcases. We make flat sheets for hospitality and for ranges that sell them.
