The market

How Portuguese brands buy bed linen

240 x 220 for the double

The capa de edredão most used on a Portuguese double bed is 240 x 220 cm, sold with two 50 x 70 cm pillowcases as a set.

A demanding home market

Portugal has its own long textile tradition, so Portuguese buyers judge cloth closely. Counter samples from an agreed specification let you compare like with like.

Hotels and holiday lets

Tourism drives a large hospitality market, where flat sheets and duvet covers are specified for frequent laundering.

Shipping

Getting goods to Portugal

DestinationPortsTransit from Nhava Sheva
SouthSinesAbout 20 to 30 days
Lisbon and the northLisbon, LeixõesAbout 20 to 30 days, often transhipped

Planning ranges from Nhava Sheva via the Suez Canal, before customs clearance. Many services tranship at a Mediterranean hub for the Atlantic ports.

EORI number

Importing into the EU needs an EU EORI number, registered in the member state where you first import, and a broker files the declaration against the EU tariff.

Information in Portuguese

Consumer information on goods sold in Portugal must be in Portuguese, so labels and packaging inserts are prepared in Portuguese.

Documents from us

Commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, with export clearance and inland transport to the port handled at our end.

Duty

Trade terms

The India-EU free trade agreement was concluded in January 2026 but is not yet in force, so normal EU duty applies to bed linen and table linen imported into Portugal today, under chapter 63 of the EU's Common Customs Tariff. Once the agreement is in force, Indian textiles are set to enter the EU without duty. Confirm the rate on your product's code in TARIC before you price a range.

Verified on 6 October 2026 against the sources below. Duty and trade terms change, so confirm the current position before you price: European Commission: EU-India trade, EU TARIC tariff database.

Labelling

What the label must carry

  • Fibre composition in Portuguese, under the EU textile labelling regulation.
  • Care symbols, not legally required but expected by Portuguese retailers.
  • Country of origin, not required by EU law but often requested by buyers.

Labels are built into production to the wording in your specification. Guidance: Your Europe: textile labelling.

Market rules

Rules worth knowing

What a buyer selling into Portugal is expected to have in hand, beyond the label. Each links to its official source. Verified on 6 October 2026.

General Product Safety Regulation

Since 13 December 2024, a consumer product sold in the EU must carry the manufacturer's name and postal and electronic address, and a product made outside the EU needs an economic operator established in the EU who is responsible for it. Usually that is the importing brand, named on the label or packaging.

EUR-Lex: Regulation (EU) 2023/988

Azo dyes under REACH

REACH restricts azo colourants that can release listed aromatic amines above 30 mg/kg in textiles in prolonged contact with skin, which includes bed linen and towels. We dye with AZO-free dyes.

ECHA: substances restricted under REACH

Portuguese language rule

Portuguese law requires product information for consumers, such as labels and instructions, to be provided in Portuguese.
