The market

How German brands buy bed linen

Two duvets on a double bed

The classic German double bed is made up with two single duvets side by side, so a double order is often a pair of 135 x 200 cm covers rather than one wide cover. Confirm which your customers buy before counting pieces.

The comfort length

155 x 220 cm covers sell heavily for taller sleepers and for more drape. Most German ranges carry both lengths, so plan both into the size run.

A square sleeping pillow

The German sleeping pillow is an 80 x 80 cm square, with a 40 x 80 cm case sold alongside it. A UK or US pillowcase does not fit, so it is a separate cut.

No top sheet

A German set is a fitted sheet, a duvet cover and pillowcases. Flat sheets are a minor line, so they are made only where you ask for them.

Shipping

Getting goods to Germany

DestinationPortsTransit from Nhava Sheva
North GermanyHamburg, BremerhavenAbout 22 to 32 days
Via the NetherlandsRotterdam, then rail or bargeAbout 22 to 32 days to Rotterdam

Planning ranges from Nhava Sheva via the Suez Canal, before customs clearance. Routing around the Cape of Good Hope during Red Sea disruption can add 7 days or more, so your forwarder confirms the schedule.

EORI number

Importing into the EU needs an EU EORI number, registered in the member state where you first import, and a broker files the declaration against the EU tariff.

Packaging register

Whoever first places packaged goods on the German market registers that packaging in the LUCID register and joins a take-back scheme. Packaging is set in your specification so it can be declared correctly.

Documents from us

Commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, with export clearance and inland transport to the port handled at our end.

Duty

Trade terms

The India-EU free trade agreement was concluded in January 2026 but is not yet in force, so normal EU duty applies to bed linen and table linen imported into Germany today, under chapter 63 of the EU's Common Customs Tariff. Once the agreement is in force, Indian textiles are set to enter the EU without duty. Confirm the rate on your product's code in TARIC before you price a range.

Verified on 6 October 2026 against the sources below. Duty and trade terms change, so confirm the current position before you price: European Commission: EU-India trade, EU TARIC tariff database.

Labelling

What the label must carry

  • Fibre composition in German, under the EU textile labelling regulation.
  • Care symbols, not legally required but expected by German retailers.
  • Country of origin, not required by EU law but often requested by buyers.

Labels are built into production to the wording in your specification. Guidance: Your Europe: textile labelling, LUCID packaging register.

Market rules

Rules worth knowing

What a buyer selling into Germany is expected to have in hand, beyond the label. Each links to its official source. Verified on 6 October 2026.

General Product Safety Regulation

Since 13 December 2024, a consumer product sold in the EU must carry the manufacturer's name and postal and electronic address, and a product made outside the EU needs an economic operator established in the EU who is responsible for it. Usually that is the importing brand, named on the label or packaging.

EUR-Lex: Regulation (EU) 2023/988

Azo dyes under REACH

REACH restricts azo colourants that can release listed aromatic amines above 30 mg/kg in textiles in prolonged contact with skin, which includes bed linen and towels. We dye with AZO-free dyes.

ECHA: substances restricted under REACH

Packaging register

Germany's packaging act requires whoever first places packaged goods on the German market to register the packaging in LUCID and join a take-back scheme before selling.

Questions

Common questions from German brands

What size is a German duvet cover?

The everyday single is 135 x 200 cm and the comfort length 155 x 220 cm. A double bed is often dressed with two singles. We cut to the finished sizes in your range rather than to a bed name.

Do German bedding sets include a flat sheet?

Usually not. A German set is a fitted sheet, a duvet cover and pillowcases, so flat sheets are made only on request.

Is there duty on Indian bed linen in Germany?

For now, normal EU duty applies. The India-EU agreement concluded in 2026 is set to remove it once it is in force, so check the current position in TARIC before you price. Duty position verified on 6 October 2026.

Who registers the packaging in Germany?

The party that first places the packaged goods on the German market, usually the importer or brand. We pack to your specification so the materials match what you register.
