The market
How Australian brands buy bed linen
Quilt covers, not comforters
Australia is a cover-led market. A set is built around a quilt cover, which Australians also call a doona cover, over a separate quilt, so we make the cover as an empty shell with a closure and corner ties.
The flat sheet stays
Unlike the UK, many Australian households still sleep under a flat sheet beneath the quilt, so sheet sets usually pair a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and pillowcases.
King Single is a standard size
King Single, a single width bed at full King length, sells heavily for children's rooms and student housing and has no US or UK equivalent. We make it on request alongside the standard schedule.
Seasons run the other way
Southern Hemisphere seasons mean winter layering ranges land in autumn. Count back from your shelf date with the timeline below, which runs to roughly three months from an approved sample to an Australian port.
Shipping
Getting goods to Australia
| Destination | Ports | Transit from Nhava Sheva |
|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | Port of Melbourne | About 18 to 26 days |
| Sydney | Port Botany | About 20 to 28 days |
| Brisbane | Port of Brisbane | About 22 to 30 days |
| Perth | Fremantle | About 14 to 21 days |
Planning ranges from Nhava Sheva, before customs and biosecurity clearance. Most sailings tranship through a Southeast Asian hub, so your forwarder confirms the schedule on the service they book.
Packing declaration
Australian biosecurity asks for a declaration of the packaging used and the cleanliness of the container. Packing materials are agreed in your specification, so what is packed matches what is declared.
Pallets and packing
Any timber pallets must be ISPM 15 treated and marked. Straw, jute and hessian packing are biosecurity risk material, so cartons and pallets are set in the specification to avoid them.
Documents from us
Commercial invoice, packing list and an ECTA certificate of origin, with export clearance and inland transport to the port handled at our end.
Duty
Trade terms
Under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, in force since 29 December 2022, Australia has charged no customs duty on any goods from India since 1 January 2026, bed linen and home textiles included, when the shipment carries a valid ECTA certificate of origin. GST is still payable on import.
Verified on 6 October 2026 against the sources below. Duty and trade terms change, so confirm the current position before you price: DFAT: using ECTA to do business with India, ABF: ECTA rules of origin.
Labelling
What the label must carry
- Care instructions, under Australia's mandatory care labelling standard, which covers bedding and household textiles.
- Country of origin, marked Made in India.
- Fibre content, which is not set by the same standard but which Australian retailers expect.
Labels are built into production to the wording in your specification. Guidance: Product Safety Australia: care labelling standard.
Market rules
Rules worth knowing
What a buyer selling into Australia is expected to have in hand, beyond the label. Each links to its official source. Verified on 6 October 2026.
Care labelling standard
The Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard 2023 makes care instructions mandatory on bedding and household textiles sold in Australia, using words or the recognised symbols.
Product Safety AustraliaOrigin at the border
Imported goods must carry a true country of origin under the Commerce (Trade Descriptions) Act, so Made in India is marked on the goods or their packaging.
ECTA rules of origin
Duty free entry needs the goods to meet the agreement's rules of origin and a certificate issued in India, valid for 12 months from issue. We arrange it with the export documents.

Questions
Common questions from Australian brands
Is bed linen from India duty free in Australia?
Under the India-Australia trade agreement, Indian made bed linen and home textiles can enter without customs duty when the shipment carries a valid ECTA certificate of origin, which we arrange with the export documents. GST is still payable on import. Duty position verified on 6 October 2026.
Do you make King Single and Super King?
Yes, on request. Our standard Australian schedule runs Single, Double, Queen and King, and King Single and Super King are added to the size run when you need them.
Quilt cover, doona cover or duvet cover?
All three name the same product: an empty cover for a separate quilt. Australians say quilt cover or doona cover. We make it to your finished size and closure, and label it in your market's wording.
What holds up an Australian shipment?
Most often the biosecurity paperwork rather than the goods. A packing declaration, ISPM 15 treated timber and no straw or hessian packing keep the container moving, so the packing is agreed in the specification before production.
