Loom Width and Why Seamless Wide Bedding Is Not Universal
Seamless wide bedding needs a loom wide enough to weave the whole panel in one piece, and most sheeting looms are not that wide. A standard loom weaves cloth narrower than a king or super king duvet face, so the panel is either joined from two pieces with a centre seam, or woven on a wide loom that few mills own. Whether you can get a seamless wide sheet depends entirely on the loom width your supplier runs, not on the fibre or the finish.

Where the seam comes from
A woven cloth can only be as wide as the loom that makes it. The reed, the warp beam and the weft insertion all cap the usable width, and after weaving the cloth loses a little more to selvedge trim and to shrinkage in finishing. So the finished width you can get is always less than the nominal loom width.
The trouble is that a large bed panel is wide. A super king duvet face or a wide bedspread is wider than the usable cloth off a normal sheeting loom. When the panel is wider than the cloth, the maker has two options: join two or more narrower widths with a seam, or weave the whole thing on a wider loom. The seam is not a defect or a shortcut. It is simply what happens when the finished piece is wider than the loom.
What loom width means, and the common bands
Loom width is quoted in inches across the trade, and it refers to the greige cloth off the loom, before finishing takes a little back. Weaving mills tend to sit in a few broad bands. The figures below are typical rather than fixed, and every mill draws its own lines.

The jump that matters is from standard to wide. Plenty of mills run to roughly 110 inches because that covers the bulk of ordinary sheeting. Going beyond, into the width a super king panel needs, is a separate investment that a smaller weaving programme may never have made.
Which bedding actually needs a wide loom
Most bedding does not need a wide loom at all. A pillowcase, a single duvet cover, a cushion front: all sit well inside a standard width. The question only bites at the top of the size range, and it bites on the width of the finished panel, not the length, because length runs along the warp and is effectively unlimited.

Remember you have to add hem and turn allowances to the finished figure, so a panel that reads as 102 inches wide needs meaningfully more than 102 inches of usable cloth. That is why a king often lands on the borderline and a super king almost always needs a wide loom to come seamless.
Why wide looms are not universal
A mill does not run wide looms simply because wider is better. There are real reasons the capability is uncommon, and they are worth understanding before you assume any supplier can offer it.
- The machines cost more and there are fewer of them. A wide loom is a larger capital item, so a weaving shed carries fewer of them and reserves them for work that needs the width.
- Wide weaving is harder to keep even. A wider warp carries more ends across a greater distance, and holding consistent tension and pick density from selvedge to selvedge is more demanding. The risk of a fault running across a wide sheet is higher.
- It is often slower. Inserting weft across a wider shed takes longer, so a wide loom can run at a lower rate than a narrow one, which feeds into cost and lead time.
- Jacquard at width is rarer still. A wide jacquard needs a larger machine with more hooks to control the extra warp threads, so a seamless wide figured cloth is a narrower capability again.
- Finishing has to match the width. It is not enough to weave wide. Dyeing, calendering, printing and the rest of the finishing line all have to handle the same width, or the wide cloth cannot be processed evenly.
The practical upshot is that even a mill with wide looms may not run every construction and every finish at full width. Wide plain cloth is one thing; a wide matelassé or a wide jacquard is a smaller subset of what any weaver can do.
When a centre seam is fine, and when it is not
A centre seam is not a flaw, and for a long time all wide bedding had one. A properly sewn, flat-felled centre seam lies flat, is centred on the panel and, on a patterned cloth, is matched across the join. In plenty of settings it is entirely acceptable.
- Hospitality often accepts seams on larger sizes, where durability and cost matter more than a seamless face.
- Value and mid-market retail frequently ship seamed wide bedding without complaint.
- Where a seam is genuinely a problem is design-led retail, photography-driven brands, and premium ranges where a buyer or a sleeper will notice a ridge down the centre of the bed. It also interrupts certain looks badly, a crisp plain percale or a matelassé relief, where a join reads as a break in the surface.
So the decision is commercial, not just technical. If your positioning and your price point make a seamless super king part of the promise, you need a supplier with the loom width to deliver it. If they do not, you either accept a seam, drop the largest size, or move the work.

Ask the loom width question early, in inches, and tie it to the exact largest panel you need. State the finished size, add your hem allowance, and confirm the mill can weave that width in the construction and finish you want, not just in plain cloth.
